We met Big Herm (yeah, like Big Worm from Friday, but with claws) while snorkeling just south of Florida. He was posted up on the ocean floor, cool as ever—totally unbothered by my sudden face-to-face appearance. I, however, was very bothered. Those claws? Nope. Hard pass. My husband, naturally, dove right down to get a closer look—if you know him you know he never meets a stranger and makes friends everywhere he goes. Turns out, Big Herm wasn’t just your average crab—he’s part of the largest hermit crab species in the Western Atlantic. These guys roam from the Caribbean all the way up to Cape Lookout, North Carolina. Since meeting Big Herm, we’ve spotted his whole extended crab family from the Bahamas to the Carolinas. Apparently, once you meet Big Herm… you’re in the crew.

- Giant Red Hermit Crabs have huge lobster like claws, with one larger, more dominant claw that they use for protection and to open shells for food.
- Giant Red Hermit Crabs aren't picky eaters—they chow down on everything from macroalgae to unsuspecting invertebrates. They've even been caught pulling off the ultimate shell heist: snacking on a conch, then moving right into its freshly vacated home like it’s beachfront property!
