Is there anything as thrilling as hooking your first redfish as a young Angler? Our son was over the moon when he reeled in his first redfish, grinning like he’d just won the fishing lottery! And wow, it’s one of the prettiest ones I’ve seen- I’m pretty sure it was flexing and posing for the picture.  That contagious excitement inspired us to weave that magic into one of our designs. Fun fact: the redfish, aka the mighty red drum, isn’t just a crowd-pleaser—it’s North Carolina’s official state fish! 
 
A little more about Redfish:
- Redfish are a beautiful copper-bronze color with spots at the base of the tail.  The spot is thought to be there to deter predators, confusing them into attacking the tail instead of the head.  There is also a variant with multiple spots all over the body that is caused by a genetic mutation and expression of a recessive gene.  This variant is known as a leopard redfish.  
- Redfish can live for over 40 years and exceed 50 pounds.
- Redfish—aka Red Drum—don’t just sound cool, they actually make music! During spawning, they produce a drumming sound by vibrating muscles against their air bladder.
 
How to Help!
Want to be a hero to North Carolina’s star redfish? Start by keeping their watery home spick-and-span—nobody likes swimming in a trashy neighborhood! If you’re into catch-and-release, grab some circle hooks to avoid gut-hooking these finned beauties; think of it like giving them a gentle high-five instead of a belly punch. Handle them with kid gloves (or wet hands, please!) and release them smoothly so they can swim off to tell their fishy friends about their adventure. Oh, and stick to size limits and fishing regs like a pro—sustainable fishing keeps the red drum party going strong for years to come!
