This is our "Coastal Outlaw" long sleeve cotton tee. Made from 100% Airlume Combed and Ringspun Cotton, it's extra soft and durable, with our Coastal Outlaw flounder design on the front. Known for bending the rules of biology, outsmarting fishermen, and vanishing into thin (well, salty) air; there’s no doubt that flounder are the true Coastal Outlaw.
Did You Know?
Flounder are flat, sneaky, and full of surprises. Carolina Royalty, Southern Flounder are prized for both their taste and their tendency to outsmart the average angler — they’re a favorite here at Mason Southerly. Born “normal”, starting life swimming upright like most fish with an eye on each side of their head; but as they grow one eye migrates to the other side and they turn flat. Nature’s way of saying, “Let’s get weird.” The inspiration behind Coastal Outlaw was the first flounder our youngest son ever caught — she was one of the prettiest flounder we’ve ever seen. Fortunately, this beauty was caught outside of North Carolina’s blink-and-you’ll-miss-it flounder season so back she went. Truth be told, she probably would’ve been released anyway — our youngest angler’s a “do no harm, catch and release” kind of fella.
Even More About Flounder
- Flounder are the masters of disguise. Once their eyes move to one side, they lie flat on the ocean floor, perfectly camouflaged and changing pattern and color to blend in with the sand and shells — ambushing shrimp and small fish that wander too close.
- Because of their shape, flounder swim sideways — not a design flaw, just efficient sneakin’.
- A female flounder can lay up to 4 million eggs in a single season.Only a tiny fraction survive to adulthood — which is why protecting them matters.
How to Help!
Know the Rules - As much as we like to kid about the abbreviated flounder season here in North Carolina, we want to have these fish around for centuries to come. Check current NC Wildlife & Marine Fisheries regulations before you fish. Seasons change fast — and fines come faster.
Catch & Release the Right Way. Use circle hooks, handle fish gently, and keep them in the water as much as possible before release. A little care means a lot of survival.
Protect Their Home.
Flounder depend on healthy marshes, seagrass beds, and estuaries. Pick up trash, support oyster reef restoration, and avoid prop-scarring in shallow grass flats.Support Fair Limits. Back efforts to balance commercial and recreational quotas. It’s not about taking sides — it’s about giving flounder a fighting chance.
