“Reel Carolina” is for our friends who just can’t bring themselves to wear Tarheel on anything — but still know a true Carolina legend when they see one. The Red Drum — or Carolina Red — is North Carolina’s state fish for a reason. From the shallow marshes of the Cape Fear to the breakers off Masonboro, its copper tail has become a symbol of home, grit, and saltwater tradition.

Even More About Red Drum
- Redfish are a beautiful copper-bronze color with spots at the base of the tail.  The spot is thought to be there to deter predators, confusing them into attacking the tail instead of the head.  There is also a variant with multiple spots all over the body that is caused by a genetic mutation and expression of a recessive gene.  This variant is known as a leopard redfish.  
- Redfish can live for over 40 years and exceed 50 pounds.
- Redfish—aka Red Drum—don’t just sound cool, they actually make music! During spawning, they produce a drumming sound by vibrating muscles against their air bladder.
