Named for that unique spot on its tail that makes it easily identifiable as a Red Drum, our Tarheel Tails tee pays tribute to the Tarheel State’s official state fish.  They call it the Carolina Red, and for good reason. From the shallow marshes of the Cape Fear to the breakers off Masonboro, the red drum is as much a part of Tarheel tradition as sweet tea and Sunday drives. The flash of that copper tail in the surf feels like home — a reminder that some legends swim right here in our own backyard.

Even More About Red Drum
- Redfish are a beautiful copper-bronze color with spots at the base of the tail.  The spot is thought to be there to deter predators, confusing them into attacking the tail instead of the head.  There is also a variant with multiple spots all over the body that is caused by a genetic mutation and expression of a recessive gene.  This variant is known as a leopard redfish.  
- Redfish can live for over 40 years and exceed 50 pounds.
- Redfish—aka Red Drum—don’t just sound cool, they actually make music! During spawning, they produce a drumming sound by vibrating muscles against their air bladder.
